The average income in Egypt is around €200 per month. From this money they have to buy food, hygiene articles, gasoline and whatever their needs for in average 5 till more family members.

Paying rent for the flat or the house where they are staying is not usual. Most of the people here have their own property, inherited for generations. This is a good thing because the support from the government is very little. The social system is builded on the family.

With this income sometimes it is really hard to buy clothes. And furthermore have the clothes are a cheap quality. So if you want to make people happy you just can donate old clothes from you. Just make sure that they are in a good condition. But all, men, women and children are very happy to have clothes from Europe.

In a hotel you either just can ask the staff, is they are interesting in the clothes. Or you just leave it there when you go, next to the tip. If you travel in the desert you will find some Bedouins. Just ask your guide or wait until you see some woman and ask her, if she needs clothes. They all will be very happy.

What kind of clothes are welcome?

  • Summer clothes (also for the women)
  • winter clothes (in the desert and in the mountains it will be really cold in the winter time temperatured under 0°C )
  • shoes for kids (I see here so many barefoot kids and they are running around - even in the rubbish)
  • underwear for kids (most of the kids I have no underwear because the money goes in more necessary things)
  • school bag's for kids
  • bra's
  • ...

If you think the Bedouin ladies or the Egyptin Moslem ladies are not interessted at short dresses you are wrong. Of course, they love it to be pretty and beautiful and to dress up a bit. They are not wearing it in public, but they have women parties or they are happy to make their husbands happy ;)

In Germany you can donate your clothes in this big donation boxes. But to be honest ... I've heard a lot of bad stuff about that. If you plan to travel to a country like Egypt, you will see the smile in their eyes when you give them what you have. They are really thankful. In this case you make sure that nobody is cheating with your values of life.
